2 broadcast basics Terms and Jargon Television reporters know and use many terms These terms will be used in class, and you WILL need to know them Each member of our news team will need to pass a terms and jargon test to complete the broadcast basics unit

3 broadcast basics Anchor The person hosting a newscast

4 broadcast basics Sound Bite or Bite A recorded comment from a news source, usually audio and video

5 broadcast basics Audio Sound heard on TV

6 broadcast basics Video Images seen on TV

7 broadcast basics Natural Sound (nat sound) Sounds recorded to capture the flavor of a news scene – birds singing, crowds cheering, planes landing, kids playing

8 broadcast basics Script A combination of anchor intros, lead-ins, toss’, etc.

9 broadcast basics Anchor Intro (Lead-in) The lead, read by an anchor, that introduces a reporter’s package

10 broadcast basics Tag (Sign-Off) The closing line where reporters say their name and station Lois Lane for Comet TV

11 broadcast basics Tease A brief headline or promo for an upcoming story

12 broadcast basics B-roll (Cover) Video images shot at a news scene that are later used to illustrate (or cover) a sound bite or reporters track that was recorded separately – Also very helpful for covering jump cuts

13 broadcast basics Track The audio recording of a reporter narrating a story

14 broadcast basics Stand-up A shot of a reporter at a news scene talking into the camera

15 broadcast basics Package A story that’s prepared by a reporter, usually taped, featuring the reporter’s track, one or more sounds bites and often a stand-up

16 broadcast basics Toss What’s said as one anchor or reporter hands off to another

17 broadcast basics VO (voice over) When the anchor speaks over video, or when a reporter narrates over video cover (b-roll)

18 broadcast basics SOT (sound on tape) A recorded sound bite (usually audio and video) played during a story

19 broadcast basics Rundown The order in which stories will appear during a newscast

20 broadcast basics Talking Head A person being interviewed; a dull sound bite of someone just talking
