Commonly Confused Pronouns

There: towards a location. – Example: Your socks are over there.

Their: shows ownership. Example: Their favorite day of the week is Sunday.

They’re: contraction for “they” and “are.” They’re = they are Example: They’re not in this building.

It’s: a contraction for it is or it has. Example: It’s a beautiful day. (It is a beautiful day.) Example: It’s been a rough day. (It has been a rough day.)

Its: the possessive form of it. Example: The shark chased its prey. Example: Constant company wears out its welcome.

Your: shows ownership. Example: Sarah doesn’t look like your sister. Example: Your toothbrush is missing.

You’re: contraction for “you” and “are.” Example: You’re getting on my last nerves. Example: The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat.

Who’s: contraction for “who” and “is” and/or “who” and “has.” Example: “Who’s coming to fix the bed?” (Who is coming to fix the bed?)

Whose: means belonging to whom. Example: Carl knows the girl whose phone was stolen.
