2. *T UNDRA * The tundra is the coldest of all biomes. The distinctive characteristic of the tundra is its soil. The soil is called permafrost, a permanently frozen layer of ground. Tundra comes from the word tunturi, meaning treeless plain.

6. *T AIGA * Taiga is the Russian word for forest and is the largest biome in the world. The taiga doesn't have as many plant and animal species as the tropical or the deciduous forest biomes. The average temperature is below freezing for six months out of the year. The main seasons in the taiga are winter and summer.

14. *G RASSLANDS * Grasslands go by many names. In the US it goes by prairies. South America refer them as pampas Grasslands are found where there is not enough rainfall.

18. *D ESERT * A desert is a region that receives no precipitation. Deserts take up about 33% of the earth. Deserts have an annual precipitation of 10in. Hot deserts usually have a large diurnal and seasonal temperate range.
