2 How the Psalms are arranged Divided into 5 books (1-41, 42-72, 73-89, 90-106, 107-150) Contains thematic sections –Psalms 120-134 are all ascents –Adjacent Psalms may have a related theme –Adjacent Psalms may compliment… Headings of many Psalms contain a classification –mizmor, shiggaion, miktam, shir, maskil, tephillah, tehillah, lehazkir, letodoah, lelammed, shir yedidot

3 Hebrew Poetry Does not have rhyme or regular meter Overall Structure –Symmetry –Balance –Choruses, repetition –Sections may be separated with selah (musical interludes?) Stanzas –Uniform –Thematic Verses –Always segmented The segments may contrast, echo or complete each other Devices –Assonance, alliteration, wordplays, acrostic
