Political and Military competition Strong navy and strategic locations for refueling (pacific islands) 3. Racial Superiority a. Anglo-Saxonism: English-speaking nations had superior character, ideas, and systems of gov’t b. Manifest destiny * Not all Americans believed in imperialism
