History BOF since members meeting in 2002. Previous presentations are on-line Now a SIG –Chaired by me –Area director is Heather Boyles
4
SIG and ITF Hard to define but intuitive. ITF –NRENs, high performance –Well connected Universities –MoU SIG –More end-user focused
5
SIG Break for presentations.
6
Discussion - What’s in a Name? Important key words –Internet2 SIG –Extending the Reach of Advanced Networking –Hard to Network Places/Remote Regions/Digital Divide –International
7
Discussion - Charter Routing SIG –This group addresses issues broadly related to routing between sites connected to the Internet2 infrastructure. –The I2rwg concerns itself with routing within and between Internet2 backbone networks, peer transit networks, gigaPoPs, and campuses; it develops policies and recommends procedures in support of scalable and efficient routing functionality across that scope. –The objective of the I2rwg is to facilitate the deployment and operation of effective routing practices for the delivery of advanced network services to Internet2 members.
8
Goals Goals are not necessary for a SIG, but –Arena-like list of networks serving hard to reach regions (e.g. Silk Road project) –List of projects that are inadequately served.
9
Future Directions Focus on Africa Reflect interests of Internet2 member universities and Internet2 International partners Steering committee?
10
Steering Committee Push things forward through regular discussion –monthly conference calls. Build a critical momentum within the SIG and among I2 member Universities until an NREN can form and be an ITF partner.
11
Next Time Fall members meeting in Philadelphia –Africa –Report from ICFA digital divide meeting –The Bethlehem Alliance (Palestine) –More volunteers wanted –I will be in contact
