C Satirical News Article
2
Getting Started... Read the article “6-Year-Old Stares Down Bottomless Abyss Of Formal Schooling.” There are copies of the article on your tables! As you read, consider the four questions we use to analyze satire.
3
The Onion The Onion is a satirical online newspaper. It takes a different spin on things in order to highlight the inefficiency of many news media publications.
4
The Assignment Working in groups of 3-4 propose a satirical solution to a real Mountain Ridge problem – think “A Modest Proposal” but not as gross. Compose a news editorial that highlights not only the in’s and out’s of your solution but also the problem. Include at least 4 different techniques identified on your satire vocabulary list – please focus on 4 techniques OUTSIDE of sarcasm. Indicate whether or not you will be using Horation or Juvenalian Satire – indicate this underneath your MLA heading. Remember that the purpose of satire is to REFORM society – so you need to be calling attention to the problem and those who contribute to the problem while simultaneously inspiring change in others.

Expectations You are ALL expected to work together and will be turning in ONE finished product. You will also evaluate your group members and their score on your evaluation will potentially impact your grade. What you turn in needs to be polished and follow MLA formatting. Your editorial should be between 500 & 525 words in length. Failure to meet this length requirement may result in loss of credit! Your solution, and by extension your editorial, MUST be school appropriate.
6
Expectations 2 truths: you need two pieces of evidence (quotes, stats, interviews, etc.) that support your claim (that the problem exists) 2 lies: you need two pieces of evidence (quotes, stats, interviews, etc.) that support your solution. Your lies should be PLAUSIBLE though. Please cite your sources - both your truths and your lies. Your solution, and by extension your editorial, MUST be school appropriate.
7
Deadlines January 19, 2016 @ the END of your class period! You will submit ONE copy of your editorial and that document will include each person’s name. You will submit ONLY electronically via turnitin.com. Late work will not be accepted! Each of you should have a working copy of your editorial each day. Do not rely on another group member to have your editorial. You should be able to access it each day in class – no exceptions. Please plan accordingly.

Day 1: What you will be doing today Select your problem – no two groups in class can have the same problem and the same solution. Have Splitek approve BOTH your topic AND your solution – I’ve been burned before. Begin drafting your editorial – You may draft by hand or electronically. Advice: share the document at the end of each day so that you have it to work on the next day in class. Not having the document is no excuse for not working on the assignment. EDITORIAL DUE: Tuesday January 19, 2016 @ the end of your class period!!
