Militarism After 1870, nearly all European powers increased the size of their armies, the sophistication of their weapons and the technology to wage war on land and sea. Railway development = ability to carry greater numbers of troops. Every country had detailed war plans.

Militarism People of Europe were proud of their armed forces. The growth of nationalism increased a desire for demonstrating military might. Leaders of government e.g. kings often in military clothes. Long periods of Conscription in most European countries. King George V of England and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia

Militarism Military values were highly regarded. Organisations like Boy Scouts were popular. Military academies for boys – Military cadets

Militarism Military parades were a feature of most countries. Military spending and investment intensified Naval days – people cheered new battleships The press praised military virtues
