Seminar 7 Effect of Cognitive and Learning Principles on Personality Development Karlene Barrett, PhD, CASAC

Overview Check In Quick Overview of Behaviorism: –The Dog Whisperer & Super Nanny –ABA, FBA –Shaping behaviors –Extinction of behaviors Social Learning and Cognitive Approaches Questions Wrap Up

The Dog Whisperer Principles of shaping behaviors What are your observations? Does it work with pets? With humans?

Sample ABC/FBA Chart Name:________________ Date:________Observer:__________________ Behaviors:___________________________________________________ DateTimeAntecedentBehaviorConsequencePossible Function

Shaping Behaviors Shaping a behavior is the reinforcement of closely-related desired behaviors that increases the frequency of the response until the desired behavior is achieved. For example: Target behavior - wash face and brush teeth before coming downstairs. At start this behavior does not occur. Using rewards such as praise for small steps (such as washing out mouth) and continuing to teach desired behavior can achieve desired result.

Extinction of Behaviors When reinforcement of an undesirable behavior is taken away the behavior will decrease, eventually becoming extinct. For example: Johnny loves to tease his sisters. They respond by screaming and crying. This is reinforcing for Johnny. When the sisters stop responding to his teasing, there is no more reward. He moves on to thinking up his next strategy

Social Learning and Cognitive Approaches Some departure from behaviorist approaches Some departure from trait and psychodyamic approaches

Consistencies Consistency Paradox: Folks do not behave the same way in all situations Examples? Behaviors will occur in situations based on how they are rewarded (consequences) Speeding tickets anyone?
