Contributing factors: 17th century was a century marked by war, revolution, rationalism, and skepticism Brought out of that period by new ideas: Excavation of ancient ruins (Herculaneum and Pompeii) caused excitement in discovery of ancient worlds Aesthetic theory was introduced as “ the study of beauty and theory of art. ” A return to antiquity and the simplicity of nature (seen most in landscape art)

Rococo Style Decorative and nonfunctional Informality replaced formality in life and painting Baroque seen as too academic and lacking in feeling and sensitivity New themes: Love, friendship, sentiment, pleasure, and melodrama.
