INTERNET SAFETY IS KEY! Online Profiling- a practice in which companies collect info about Web sites a consumer visits, and then uses that info to predict what the consumer may buy in the future. – Think Facebook or your email account and advertisements – Usually things you’ve recently searched for will show up! – SCARY I know! COOKIES- small files that are stored on your computer’s hard dive when you visit a site. Cookies “remember” info about you.

1.4 Deceptive Advertising Advertising that likely misleads consumers to make purchases through false statements, omitted info, or other unfair means. It is ILLEGAL and the FTC should help you stop it. You, the consumer, has to be aware of such practices as: Bait and Switch False promise of free gifts Deceptive pricing Hidden catches

Deceptive Advertising Bait and Switch – Most common Similar to trading up except there was never an item to originally sell. Practice of baiting customers with an advertised but non-existent bargain and then switching to a more expensive product that the consumer didn’t need.

Fraud DEFINITION: deceitful conduct designed to manipulate another person for some gain. Things to look out for: – Offer a deal that is too good to be true – Ask for your credit card or SSN to verify your identity. – Must buy something to get something else of greater value. – Demand you act now or offer will expire. – Refuse to identity themselves or their organization. – Refuse to provide telephone number. – They usually play on your emotions.

Types of Fraud Pyramid Schemes/Chain Letters – Type of financial fraud in which people pay to join an organization in exchange for the right to sell memberships to others. – The pyramid sells no legitimate product. – Get Rich Quick Schemes – Chain Letters can be snail mail or email schemes! Watch out! Example: Want to make money at home schemes?

Technology has added wrinkles… Worthless internet domain names Paying for items online and getting nothing in return USE safe means to purchase items! Check out this: wemarket4u.netwemarket4u.net CONSUMER RESPONSIBILITY: – ALERT the FTC by calling or going online. Stop it if it happens to you so it doesn’t happen again!

1.5 Resolving Consumer Problems It’s all in your attitude! When something goes askew…start with these tips and tricks: 1.State problem clearly and calmly. 2.State the outcome you desire. 3.Gather up receipts, product info related to the purchase. 4.Read up on the store’s return policy 5.Proceed to the store/contact merchant 1.Start with a sales person at guest services or if it’s about service whoever did the service work. 2.Take notes. Having notes is probably the best way to document whom you’ve talked with and what time/date it occurred. Can be useful down the line if issue escalates. 3.BE POLITE- it’s not this person’s fault (usually) for the issue you are having! 4.If they don’t satisfy your desires/requests ask to speak to management. 5.Continue to be POLITE and clearly restate your issue/problem. 6.Write a letter of complaint.complaint.
