1 Lesson 3 – 1 Parallel Lines and Transversals
Geometry Lesson 3 – 1 Parallel Lines and Transversals Objective: Identify the relationships between two lines or two planes. Name angle pairs formed by parallel lines and transversals.

2 Parallel Lines Parallel lines Coplanar lines that do not intersect.

3 Parallel Planes Parallel Planes Planes that do not intersect.

4 Skew Lines Skew lines Lines that do not intersect and are not coplanar.

5 Identify each of the following.
All segments parallel to JP A segment skew to KL A plane parallel to plane PQR

6 Identify each of the following.
All segments skew to BC A segment parallel to EH All planes parallel to plane DCH Plane ABG

7 Transversal Transversal
A line that intersects two or more coplanar lines at two different points.

8 You must memorize these relationships! Interior angles Exterior angles
Consecutive angles Alternate interior angles Alternate exterior angles Corresponding angles You must memorize these relationships!

9 Corr. Alt. Ex. Cons. Int. Alt. Int.
Classify the relationship between each pair of angles as alternate interior, alternate exterior, corresponding, or consecutive interior angles. Either write out the full word(s) or use these abbreviations. Corr. Alt. Ex. Cons. Int. Alt. Int.

10 Alt Ex. Alt. Int. Corr. Cons. Int.
Classify the relationship between each pair of angles as alternate interior, alternate exterior, corresponding, or consecutive interior angles. Either write out the full word(s) or use these abbreviations. Alt Ex. Alt. Int. Corr. Cons. Int.

11 Corr. Cons. Int. Alt. Ex. Alt. Int.

12 Transversal: h Alt. Ex. Transversal: k Cons. Int. Transversal: Corrs.
Identify the transversal connecting each pair of angles in the photo. Then classify the relationship between each pair of angles. Transversal: h Alt. Ex. Transversal: k Cons. Int. Transversal: Corrs.

13 Is c a transversal? No, because it does not intersect at 2 points.
