THE HOMEWORK... WHAT’S THE POINT?

GOT TO DO HOMEWORK? Because it’s assigned by the teacher, and will be corrected/graded Because quizzes/exams are kind of similar to homework problems Because I want to get a good grade (GPA) Typical ideas (but ALL WRONG):  I got correct answer (number)... what’s wrong?  It’s OK (actually, great) to do homework in a study group... ?  I need a tutor... ?

“WHY” HOMEWORK? Engineering is all about problem solving You need to practice & develop your problem solving skills (in-class examples only provides you “where to begin”) Engineering problem solving has four essential components:  Valid theoretical baseline & assumptions  Accurate solution procedure & analysis  Clear explanation of step-by-step processes  Well defined conclusion

“TYPICAL” HOMEWORK SOLUTIONS DEFINITION OF SYMBOLS? WHAT PROBLEM IS THIS? ANY EXPLANATION OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING? WHAT’S THE PRINCIPLE, METHOD, OR THEORY THAT YOU EMPLOYED? WHAT’S YOUR CONCLUSION? ?

“ACCEPTABLE” HOMEWORK SOLUTIONS SAMPLE Dr. Hayashibara’s work (aerodynamics, in 1994)...

HOMEWORK SOLUTIONS MUST INCLUDE... Well-defined Problem statement with a figure & coordinates Governing equation stated Correct assumptions applied Detailed “step-by-step” explanation Conclusion SAMPLE

The BEST WAY to be unsuccessful in an engineering course is: “NOT DOING HOMEWORK RIGHT” Here are some examples of unsuccessful student’s behavior... Not really attempting to solve the problems by oneself (copying from someone’s work, relying heavily on classmates or friends, and/or asking help on literally every single problem from the teacher...) Not really spending enough time to think about (just trying to get the work done, and not really trying to understand the concepts...) Not really checking the work against solutions (not correcting the errors or misunderstandings...)

THE HOMEWORK... ? You must Do-it-ALL-by-Yourself ! That is... “YOUR JOB”
