CELLS …..as units of Life. Ch. 7.1 A View of the Cell

CELLS  Basic units of:  Structure and  Function  of all living things.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY:  STRUCTURE ?  FUNCTION ?

 STRUCTURE= HOW IT IS BUILT/CONSTRUCTED.  FUNCTION= WHAT IT DOES, HOW IT WORKS.

The Cell Theory:  All organisms are composed of one or more cells  The cell is the basic unit of organization for the organism  All cells come from pre- exiting cells

Two basic cell types: Prokaryotic & Eukayotic Prokaryotic cells  Earliest cells  Lack membrane bound organelles  No nucleus  No mitochondria  Have membrane, cytoplasm & free DNA :

An Organelle Is: A minute structure within a plant or animal cell that has a particular job or function.

Prokayrotic cells: Bacteria

Eukaryotic cells:  May have evolved from Prokaryotic  Have a nucleus that holds the DNA inside a membrane  Have mitochondria  Also have cell membrane & cytoplasm

What are some differences between animal and plant cells? ANIMAL PLANT Nucleus Mitochondria

Human muscle cells With large nuclei

Eukaryotic Cells: are found in animals like Paramecium Nucleus With DNA For reproduction

Mitochondria = where energy is released The power house of the cell: ATP Has a membrane like The nucleus

Exception: A Eukaryotic Cell With NO NUCLEUS !

What are some differences between animal and plant cells? ANIMAL PLANT

Organelles found only in Plants: Cell Walls Cellulose Chloroplasts

Plant Cell  Chloroplast= absorbs light, changes light energy into chemical energy for photosynthesis = GREEN  Cell Wall= forms rigid outer structure, made of cellulose (fiber)  Cellulose = carbohydrate found in cell walls

PLANT CELL Cell wall Large vacuole Chloroplast

Diatoms Both plants & protists have: chloroplasts cell walls cellulose Plant cells

Animal Cell No Wall, Just a Cell Membrane

Centrioles = involved in cell division Organelles found only in Animal cells:

Found in both Plant and Animal Cells Organelles that surround cells for support: Cytoskeleton = gives structure to a cell Cell Membrane= Semi-permeable, controls what enters and leaves the cell, outer containment envelope.
