Key Terms
2
cell The basic unit of all living things. Carries out all of the activities in a living thing.
3
cell wall Is only found in plant cells and its purpose is to shape and protect the cell. It supports and creates the shape of a cell.
4
chromosomes Threadlike strands made up of a material called DNA. Carries information that directs each cells activities.
5
nucleus A dense, round structure in the cytoplasm that controls cell activities. Cell brain or the "computer" of the cell.
6
ribosomes The protein builders or the protein synthesizers of the cell. It creates protein.
7
mitochondria They are organelles that act like a digestive system that takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy for the cell.digestive system Called the "powerhouse of the cell" because it creates energy for the cell.
8
nuclear membrane The double-layer of thin tissue enclosing the nucleus of a cell. Gate of the nucleus. Controls what goes in and out.
9
chloroplast Are the food producers of the cell and only found in plant cells. Green in color. It is the place of photosynthesis; where energy is made for plant cells.
10
cytoplasm Is the fluid that fills a cell. Jelly-like substance within the cell that holds up the other cell parts within the cells.
11
vacuole Storage bubbles found in plant cells. It's the "warehouse" in a cell that stores food and waste products.
12
Functions as a packaging system and there are two types of ER (endoplasmic reticulum) smooth and rough. It is used to transport food or other materials from one part of the cell to another. endoplasmic reticulum
13
A thin membrane around the cytoplasm of an animal cell; controls passage of substances in and out of the cell "Traffic-cop". It selects what enters the cell. cell membrane
14
golgi apparatus (bodies) Organelles consisting of stacks of membrane covered sacs that package and move proteins to the outside of the cell. Works with the Endoplasmic Reticulum to transport materials across the cell.
