VOCABULARY Because of Winn-Dixie Chapter (4-6)

2 constellations constellations- groups of stars forming recognizable patterns….. Opal’s mom knew all the constellations, every planet in the nighttime sky….. every last one of them. She could name them, and point them out. And, she never got tired of looking at them. The Big Dipper is part of the constellation Ursa Major.

3 trembling trembling- shaking involuntarily, typically as a result of anxiety, excitement, or frailty Miss Franny sat there trembling and shaking.

4 judge . judge- to form an opinion about something
The word “judge” can be used in a good (positive) way and a bad (negative) way. See the following slides:

5 judge …. the bad way …. This lady must be weird because she does not dress the same way as my mother. Do not judge her by her clothes! Actually, she is a very smart and nice lady. She lived in a different time period than we do.

6 judge – to form an opinion about something
an okay way to use the word “judge”…….. The man judged which food would win the cooking contest.

7 pews pews….. long benches with a back, placed in rows in the main part of a church to seat people This church has lots of pews on both sides.

8 ought ought- used to indicate an expected state; should
You ought to eat healthy food to keep you strong.

9 skidding The dog went skidding across the ice on his bottom.
skidding - sliding, typically sideways on slippery ground as a result of stopping or turning too quickly

10 howled . howled- cried loudly in pain, fear, or anger

11 motto Where Young Minds Learn Great Things
motto- a short sentence or phrase chosen to express the beliefs of an organization….. The Open Arms Baptist Church of Naomi isn’t a regular looking church. The building used to be a Pick-It-Quick store. Its motto was “ PICK PICK PICK QUICK QUICK QUICK. Northwest Laurens Elementary has a motto/mission statement: Where Young Minds Learn Great Things

12 select . select- to carefully choose as being the best or most suitable The children selected books from the shelves to read and enjoy.

13 positive positive- with no possibility of doubt; clear and definite
“Miss Franny Block,” I said, “ that’s not a bear. That’s a dog. That’s my dog, Winn-Dixie.” “Are you positive?” she asked.
