7
THE STUDY OF MATTER CHEMISTRY IS…
8
Why Study Chemistry?
9
VIDEO: People Who Took Chemistry… You should be able to cite the following examples from the video. ENVIRONMENT (GLACIERS) CLOTHING (FIBERS & DYES) FUELS (METHANOL, HYDROGEN) PERSONAL CARE (DEODORANT / ANTIPERSPIRANT) COMMUNICATION (PUBLISHER / EDITOR) PLASTICS (PET, BOTTLES, FLEECE CLOTHING) LEGISLATION (LAWS) RECORDING MEDIA (CD / DVD)
10
SO… YOU HAD THE LIST OF EXAMPLES WHAT WERE 3 MAJOR POINTS?
11
3 MAJOR REASONS to Study Chemistry:
12
ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE TERMS “PURE” & “APPLIED” SCIENCE?
13
Pure Vs. Applied Science! Pure = Research (EXPERIMENT for knowledge) Applied = Technology
14
SO… WHAT DO YOU THINK “PURE” & “APPLIED” CHEMISTRY MEANS?
15
WHAT ARE THE MAJOR TYPES OF CHEMISTS?
16
TYPES OF CHEMISTS: ORGANIC CHEMIST INORGANIC CHEMIST BIOCHEMIST PHYSICAL CHEMIST ANALYTICAL CHEMIST

1.1 CHEMISTRY ASSIGNMENT

TIME FOR A QUICK ACTIVITY? I NEED TO TEST YOUR MEASUREMENT SKILLS
19
NAME(S): ________________________________________________ Recording Measurements Activity Procedure: 1. Use the meter stick to measure the length & width of your text book. 2. Use the meter stick to measure the diameter & length/width of a pen, penny & quarter. 3. Use these measurements to calculate the volume of each object. 4. Use a graduated cylinder to find the volume of your penny. Analysis: Create a data table that is neat & organized, and can hold all the data you collected above. Conclusion: 1. How did the volumes of the penny compare? Which do you believe is most accurate? Name two ways you could have obtained more accurate results in this lab. 2. Why didn’t you do these things? 3. Explain why your measurements have the number of digits you recorded.

WHO IS A SCIENTIST?
26
Get new car, replace engine, replace each engine part one at a time…
27
SCIENTIFIC METHOD OBSERVE & COLLECT ANY INITIAL DATA HYPOTHESIZE DESIGN & CONDUCT AN EXPERIMENT COLLECT EXPERIMENTAL DATA/OBSERVATIONS “Quantitative” = number, “Qualitative” = description What CONCLUSION can you reach ???
