Starter – match up the different types of love
Platonic love Love that is not openly reciprocated, even though it is deeply desired. Familial love In the modern sense means love into which a sexual element does not enter. However, the true meaning is that the love was built on chastity rather than a lack of desire. Unrequited love The love that occurs between two people of either the same or opposite sex where people are considered to share a deeper than usual emotional connection. Romantic love The love felt for one’s family.

Francesco Petrach In the Petrachan sonnet it was usual to compare women’s features to nature and to liken the mistress to a goddess. Descriptions were often completely over the top, using hyperbole (exaggeration and overstatement), eg. ‘You are angelically pure.’

1. How does Petrach present his ideas of love? 2. How does Shakespeare present his ideas of love? 3. Do you prefer the Petrachan sonnets or Sonnet 130? Why? 4. What do you notice about the structure of the sonnets? How can you tell they are both sonnets? 5. Write your own love poem – if you can do it in the style of a sonnet
