Students can look at a persuasive text (science journal article, newspaper column, etc). They will annotate the article by labeling the following in the margins when they see these components used by the author: claim, evidence, and reasoning. Students can also place the claim, evidence, and reasoning on large paper to allow their peers to see if they all gathered the same components or if there were different perspectives. PROCEDURE

Students can use the C.E.R framework to begin building their own arguments. This can be done in a graphic organizer or in paragraph form. The three components of C.E.R assists students in breaking argumentation into smaller components. PROCEDURE [continued]
