TISSUES NOTES PART 2

List the body organization terms in the correct order. The correct order of body organization is: atoms – molecules – cells – tissues – organs – organ systems – organism. Define the term “tissue”. A tissue is similar cells with the same function. Which tissue functions to cover or line organs? Epithelial tissue functions to cover or line organs.

What is the function of stratified squamous epithelium? The function of stratified squamos epithelium is protection from injury. What are columnar epithelium? Columnar epithelium are long rectangular cells, packed close together. Which type of tissue moves mucus or eggs? Ciliated epithelium (aka: psuedostratified epithelium) moves mucus or eggs. Where is ciliated epithelium located? Ciliated epithelium is located in the trachea and fallopian tubes (oviducts)

Tissue:Stratified squamous epithelium How do you know? Cells are round on the bottom and begin to flatten out on top Location:skin

Tissue:Ciliated Epithelium (aka: psuedostratified epithelium) How do you know?Cells have cilia on them Location:Trachea & fallopian tubes (oviducts)

Tissue:Columnar Epithelium How do you know?Cells are shaped like columns Location:Lining of the digestive tract

II. CONNECTIVE TISSUE living cells in a non-living MATRIX Matrix: intra cellular substance in which tissue is “housed” or embedded Definition: Several different types

A. Loose Connective Tissue Matrix: collagen & elastin (proteins), tissue fluid (water) Location: dermis of skin, subcutaneous layer, around nerves & blood vessels

B. Dense (Fibrous) Connective Tisssue Matrix: parallel collagen fibers (strength) Location: ligaments and tendons

Ligament graft in the elbow of a baseball player

C. Blood living cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets Matrix: plasma (mostly water) Location: blood vessels – entire body

D. Bones living cells - osteocytes Matrix: calcium, phosphorous, collagen Location: skeleton

E. Cartilage (3 types) 1. Hyaline Cartilage connects ribs to sternum – covers ends of bones

Normal knee cartilage between femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone)

2. Elastic Cartilage outer ear, vocal cords

3. Fibrocartilage between vertebrae & other joints

F. Adipose Tissue (fat) large cells found throughout the body Structure: vacuole with fat droplet Function: stored energy, food, padding, insulation

Which one takes up more space?
