DSQ If you remember your childhood, the hare challenges a tortoise to a race, lets say it was 5 miles. Use the graph to answer the following questions. 1.) Who’s speed is faster during the first 5 min. 2.) What did the hare do 5-20 min? 3.) Who won the race? 4.) Who has the higher average speed?

DSQ Jane drives for 3 hours south on a journey of 135 miles. What was Jane’s average speed for the journey? What was Jane’s average velocity? Chris cycles at an average speed of 8 mph. If he cycles for 6 hours, how far does he travel? Every summer I drive to Michigan. It is 3900 km to get there. If I average 100 km/hr, how much time will I spend driving?

Nikki has to travel a total of 351 miles. She travels the first 216 miles in 4 hours. What is her average speed for the first part of the journey? Her average speed is the same for the whole of her journey. How long does the whole journey take?

Update Notebook We are going to rip out the miscellaneous section and replace it with a vocabulary section. When finished, please write down these vocab words. 1. Physics - “the study of matter, energy, and the interaction between them” 2. Motion – distance from another object is changing 3. Speed = D/T 4. Velocity = Speed + Direction
6
Motion An object is in motion when it’s distance is changing from another object. Reference Point – a point, place, or object that is used for comparison to determine if something is in motion. Relative motion – relative to what Mr. Officer.

International System of Units (SI) System
Based on the number ten. 3 awesome things about it Easy to convert The rest of the word uses it Can measure small things Bad news; You didn’t grow up with it so you have to play catch up and get use to it because it’s what we use in science
8
Speed Speed = Distance / Time
9
Speed Speed = Distance / Time
If Steve throws the football 60 meters in 3 seconds, what is the average speed of the football? A baseball is thrown a distance of 20 meters. What is its speed if it takes 0.5 seconds to cover the distance?
10
Velocity Velocity = Speed + Direction
A truck moves 100 miles to the south in 2 hours. What is the trucks velocity? A regulation NBA basketball court is 94 feet long. If Wale runs the length of the court (from left to right) in 5 seconds, what is his velocity?

Graphing Motion Traditionally time is shown on the x-axis and distance on the y-axis. Side note- independent variable = x-axis, Dependent variable = y-axis. A straight line represents constant speed The slope of the line represents the how quickly or slowly the object is moving
