Function Removes waste products from the blood Cells produce wastes which move out of the cells and into the blood by diffusion Breakdown of protein produces ammonia. The liver changes it to urea The kidneys remove the urea from the blood The kidneys also control water balance in the body

Kidneys We have 2 kidneys, which act as filters for the blood About 1 L of blood passes through the kidneys every minute

Each kidney is made up of millions of tubules called nephrons Each nephron is surrounded by capillaries

Ureters Urine is carried from the kidneys to the bladder by tubes called ureters The urethra carries the urine out of the body when you urinate

Bladder Stores urine until is is removed from the body

Urethra The tube that leads from the bladder to the outside of the body to remove urine
