How do we effectively manage metadata? One way is to utilize metadata crosswalks
2
There are many different metadata schemas, so what happens when one becomes outdated or a better system comes along? We put the information into another format…. The crossover of data from one schema to the next is done by utilization of a crosswalk
3
What is a crosswalk? Metadata crosswalks are a type of table in which different formats of information are linked. Their equivalences are shown in relation to each other. Two schemas are put side by side in a table to illustrate their correlating fields.
4
Interoperability Crosswalks are a grand illustration of interoperability- they show "the ability of various systems to interact with each other no matter the hardware of software being used" (Taylor 95). Interoperability is highly desirable in cataloging. The more accurate the crosswalk, the less loss of information there is.
5
How to create a crosswalk? To create a crosswalk you must first know the current format of the information, and the desired format.. Usually "a crosswalk and the inverse crosswalk are developed in parallel" (Nogueras-Iso 108). If there are any differences between the two, notes must be properly inserted to avoid confusion.
6
Here is an example of a crosswalk that compares MARC and Dublin Core
7
pros and cons of crosswalks PRO -Clean system of organization/conversion -Interoperability -Aids the retrieval of data Con -Requires strong skills in various bibliographic classification systems - loss of data possibility is high - Easily susceptible to error
