Is This What You Call Learning?

What an amazing opportunity! Our SITP students have been fortunate to participate in a variety of week-long collaborative learning environments.  These are based on grade level standards with Museum Educators and Classroom Teachers to study, explore, and discover while they attend school at Balboa Park for the past 10 years. 4 What do students take away from SITP?  Over the years, students come away from these SITP experiences  with a collection of ideas…  reflections on what they have learned through these amazing opportunities and  they take these ideas and reflections on to the upper grades  better prepared to make connections and  succeed in the next level of learning they will experience.  Over the years, students come away from these SITP experiences  with a collection of ideas…  reflections on what they have learned through these amazing opportunities and  they take these ideas and reflections on to the upper grades  better prepared to make connections and  succeed in the next level of learning they will experience.

At Museum of Man, students learn about artifacts.  They conduct a “dig” at an archaeological site, and find out how the past connects to the present.  Students compare and contrast cultures, explore & reflect on how their culture is different and the same as those they investigate. Museum of Man

Museum of Natural History  What about studying things in the natural environment?  At Natural History Museum, students take a look at weather…oops… Meteorology, Rocks and Minerals…the rock cycle, volcanoes…  and visit incredible exhibits like the “Dead Sea Scrolls!”  What about studying things in the natural environment?  At Natural History Museum, students take a look at weather…oops… Meteorology, Rocks and Minerals…the rock cycle, volcanoes…  and visit incredible exhibits like the “Dead Sea Scrolls!”

Reuben H. Fleet Museum

Fleet Exhibit - Science Fair They learn about molecules,  study the periodic table,  explore chemistry,  magnetism and electricity,  mixtures & solutions, and  physical properties of objects.  SITP students enrich their learning in science while delving into awesome experiments at this museum!. Students participate in investigations in small group teams collecting and analyzing data and making observations.

Museum of Photographic Arts Museum educators show students how to explore content in photographs to help them create their own photographs with a:  Point of view  Bird’s eye view  Worm’s eye view  Close-up  Long Shot  Side View  Angle View

MOPA Student Exhibition

MOPA Student Exhibition… Whole Family Involvement at the Park!  The SITP program organizes opportunities for families to participate along with their children. In Spring 2008, students entered a contest to have photographs they took while at MOPA in an exhibit for Fall 2008.  Every student’s photograph won a place in this museum’s exhibit.

Air and Space Museum

The Focus is on Experimenting in Science…  At the Air & Space Museum, students build gliders and rockets and collect data on their launches.  They design & create a space capsule with an astronaut (a blinking ball) inside it.  The goal is for their “astronaut” to survive the landing….If the light doesn’t blink upon landing - the astronaut landed alive!

The Astronaut Launch…. Who Will Survive?

Is it a Solid, Liquid, or Gas Molecule? How Can You Tell?

Recording & Discussing Data From the Glider Launch

Measuring the Height of the Rocket Launch

Hot Air Balloon Designs are Launched

Investigating Mass and Gravity

Thank You! 10 years of AMAZING EDUCATION! We ALL appreciate everything each person has contributed to SITP to create this innovative learning environment for the students who have attended.

Representative Museum Educators

Representative Museum Aides and Student Teachers from SDSU

Representative SITP Supporters… Classroom Teachers, Price Charities, and SITP Staff

10 Years ago…SITP began with dedication and commitment + Susan Wachowiak’s AMAZING leadership skill!

Thank you all!
