VISION ZERO CONFERENCE HOW CRASH DATA IS COLLECTED & ANALYZED P HILADELPHIA S TATISTICS Philadelphia is multimodal city Since 2010, over 10,600 crashes have occurred every year While drivers and pedestrians make up the majority of people involved in crashes… Other modes are more likely to be severely injured or killed if involved in a crash We have seen pedestrian fatalities continue to rise every year since 2010

VISION ZERO CONFERENCE HOW CRASH DATA IS COLLECTED & ANALYZED W HAT IS A CRASH IN P ENNSYLVANIA ? Crash requires that a motorvehicle is involved AND – Someone is injured in the crash; and/or – A vehicle has to be towed from the scene What is a crash? – A car hits another car and one of the cars is towed from the scene – A car hits a pedestrian and the pedestrian goes to the hospital What is a crash not? – A cyclist hits a pedestrian and the pedestrian goes to the hospital – A car hits a pedestrian and the pedestrian walks away and the car is able to drive away

VISION ZERO CONFERENCE HOW CRASH DATA IS COLLECTED & ANALYZED O NGOING D ISCUSSIONS Data Accuracy – What crash events are we capturing? – Currently the City is designing a possible research program to bridge the gaps in our data Crashes vs. Crash Severity – Do we want to rank intersections/roadways by the number of crashes which occur? – Vision Zero is focused on the elimination of fatalities and severe injuries, we should be ranking our intersections/roadways to match Normalization – Which is more important, the number of crash events? Or the number of crash events per number of road users? – Ongoing bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicle counts by DVRPC help to illustrate a larger picture and put crashes in context Other Data Resources – What other data resources could we obtain with greater resources? – Behavior data from police citations and warnings, fleet telematics
