“Developing Leaders for the Renaissance of New York” Renaissance is based on the conviction that a change in the destiny of a single individual can lead to a change in the destiny of a community, nation, and ultimately humankind. Its mission as a PK-12 school is to foster educated, responsible, humanistic young leaders who will spark a renaissance in New York through their own personal growth. Its graduates will be global citizens with an abiding respect for peace, human rights, the environment, and sustainable development.

A Typical Day in Pre-Kindergarten at The Renaissance Charter School 8:20 - 8:30 Morning attendance/sign in and morning work (fine motor skills, puzzles, drawing and math manipulatives) 8:30 – 9:05 Indoor Recess 9:10 – 9:30 Breakfast in the classroom 9:30 – 9:45 Morning Meeting - go over attendance, weather, calendar, review nursery rhymes and practice oral language and phonological awareness skills, count (using unifix cubes) how many students are in the classroom, dance! 9:45- 10:15 Spanish

A Typical Day in Pre-Kindergarten at The Renaissance Charter School 10:15 – 10:35 Whole Group Mini Lesson - focuses on our study at the time and/or math, science, social studies and literacy; periodically a read aloud geared towards a literacy skill 10:35 – 11:45 Center Time - centers vary from week to week, but we normally have at least one literacy center, one math center, science, and social studies as a whole class during our minilessons. 11:45 – 11:55 Soul Dance 12:00 – 12:30 Gym 12:30 – 1:00 Lunch in the classroom 1:00-2:00 Nap Time 2:00-2:25 Snack

A Typical Day in Pre-Kindergarten at The Renaissance Charter School 2:30-2:55 Choice Time - students are given the choice to choose which center they would like to go to - usually these is an art activity for them to choose as well. Our centers include sand table, play dough, painting, puzzles, art, blocks and Legos, dress up, reading in the literacy corner, light table and sometimes science experiments depending on our study. 2:55-3:10 Read Aloud and discussion 3:10 Pack up and go home Busing is not available for UPK students. We do not have an after-school program for UPK students, so you must be able to pick up your child promptly at dismissal. Arrangements for after-school child-care may be made through our partner, 82nd Street Academics, Inc.

A Typical Day in Kindergarten at The Renaissance Charter School Morning work, with a writing focus. Morning meeting where the morning message links to instruction. Writing block based on the writing workshop model and a literacy block based on the Daily 5. The Daily 5 is a series of literacy tasks which children complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups.

A Typical Day in Kindergarten at The Renaissance Charter School Children receive daily instruction in math. Our math program is Singapore Math, which focuses on children mastering a limited number of concepts each school year. We also teach children social studies using Social Studies Alive! The units are meaningful to a Kindergartener. They include: “My School” “My Class Community” “How to be a Good Friend”

A Typical Week in 5 th Grade at The Renaissance Charter School Balanced Literacy Block for 1hour and 45 minutes each day. This includes Guided Reading, Group Reading, Shared Inquiry Discussions, Independent Reading and Writers’ Workshop. Mathematics instruction for 1 hour each day. Inquiry and Lab-based Science Instruction using the FOSS Science Program 45 minutes each day. Social Studies Instruction following the History Alive! Curriculum 45 minutes each day. Spanish Instruction 45 minutes 3 days a week. Fine Art and Music 45 minutes 3 days a week. Recess and / or Gym every day for at least a ½ hour. Book Club 2 days a week for 45 minutes. Lunch is ½ hour daily.

Admission to TRCS All admissions to TRCS, inclusive of UPK – Grade 12 is by lottery, which is held in the 1 st week in April. Eligibility for Pre-Kindergarten - Your child must turn four years of age by December 31, 2016 in order to be eligible. Proof of age will be required to enroll your child. Pre-Kindergarten is the main entry point for admission to Renaissance. We encourage you to enroll your child, if he or she is eligible. UPK students will automatically move into Kindergarten at Renaissance and can remain here until they graduate in their Senior Year (Grade 12). There is no need to reapply. Eligibility for Kindergarten - Incoming Kindergarten students must attain the age of five by December 31 of the year they enter school.

Pre-K to 12th Grade Admissions Information All applicants for Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 5th Grade will be notified of the results of the lottery. All students not picked in the lottery will be placed on the waiting list, and mini-lotteries will be held whenever a seat opens up in grades PK-12. HS Applications are automatically placed on a waiting list, to be filled when we have confirmation of vacant seats. General Information Renaissance serves approximately 565 PK-12 students. Class size is approximately 25 in each class. We have one full-day pre-kindergarten class of eighteen students. There is one class per grade (K-4). Two classes per grade (5-12). High school students can attend Renaissance until the age of 21 or until a high school diploma is obtained, whichever comes first.
