It’s Tricky Methods and Research
2
IV and DV Find hypothesis and convert into an if…then statement.
IV is what comes after the “if” statement (the cause of the behavior being studied) DV is what comes after the “then” statement (the expected effect of the IV
3
IV and DV Students walking briskly during passing periods will increase student participation during class. IV – If…walk briskly…walking briskly DV – then…participate more in class
4
IV and DV One-half of the general psychology students complete computer simulations. The remaining half of the students spent an equal amount of time reviewing the text and their lecture notes. Both groups were then tested on the course information. Hypothesis If students use computer simulations, they will score higher on tests.
5
Control Group vs Experimental Group
Gets the IV Control Group Does not get the IV

Control Group vs Experimental Group
One-half of the general psychology students complete computer simulations. The remaining half of the students spent an equal amount of time reviewing the text and their lecture notes. Both groups were then tested on the course information. Hypothesis If students use computer simulations, they will score higher on tests. Control – group with notes and text Experimental – group with computer simulations
7
Hypothesis vs Theory Theory – organizing explanations of natural events to generate hypothesis and make predictions of behavior. Hypothesis – generate a specific prediction designed to test a theory often expressed in an “if…then” statement.
