DEBATE AS A CLUB I’d like you to set two goals for your team’s success this year. One should be very attainable but not easy, and one should be more elusive.
2
DEBATE AS A CLUB Goal one- Return 20 students to next year’s team. Goal two- Have multiple teams clear at the GFCA state tournament.
3
DEBATE AS A CLUB Jeff named this session, I didn’t… And like most things Jeff Miller does, it makes me quite angry.

The Key to Success 1) get your self one of these:
5
Do not overburden yourself… When you are starting out, focus on a few things. Choose one style of debate and one or 2 IE’s… 2-5 tournaments a semester. Set realistic Goals. Your sophomores probably aren’t going to win Emory…
6
Budgeting… A) Dues B) Prices C) Fundraising makes me hate life. D) Parent involvement. (Judge fees suck!) E) Hotels are expensive!
7
Recruiting… How do you do it? I suck at this! It’s so hard without a class… Here are my suggestions: a) Teach Honors 9 th graders… b) Get them to a tournament about 5 minutes after they come in your classroom. c) Let students get crushed. Even the really smart ones. d) Give me your tired, your weary… But they need a computer. e) Don’t fight for band kids. f) Friends and family. g) 8 th grade visits/ demo debates.

Practice AI said it best: Practice Twice a week seems to work best. i) Mini debates ii) Impromptu and Extemp. (Hook, and then a “bad” 5 paragraph essay.) iii) Claim / warrant activities iv) The theory hat. v) Working on cases. Start with the briefs (You don’t have to buy them, google it, or email me.) vi) Rebuttal redos. vii) Flowing rap songs … http://www.gaspeechanddebate.org/for-the-classroom/http://www.gaspeechanddebate.org/for-the-classroom/
