1 A Discovery or Revelation One Type of Hook

2 What is a Revelation? A revelation is a realization that the writer has just made. It is presented in the form of a recent discovery as if the topic of the essay has just been figured out. Using the idea of the writer’s discovery means that this type of hook would need to be used in the first person point of view. This type of hook is rather causal, so it would not be wisely used in an essay of a weighty matter.

3 A Sample I have spent many hours thinking about what to buy all the members of my family for Christmas this year, and I have come to a conclusion. Annually, I ponder this conundrum, What should I buy? What will they like? How much should I spend? I am tired of these same questions each year. The solution to my annual Christmas problem is to simply buy all of my family gift cards. I know where they like to shop, buying gift cards will save me many hours, and these gifts can be easily mailed to my family members who live far away. 4 Another Sample For days I have been reading Janet Evanovich’s latest mystery, and I finally figured out why I love her books so much. I have read all twenty-three of her Stephanie Plum series and am now enthralled with her new series too. Janet Evanovich’s mystery books are the best because of her unique characters, the ineptitude of her detectives, and the humor woven throughout the plot.
