1
Objective: Students will be able to know and understand the meristematic tissues and permanent tissues of a plant.
2
PLANT CELLS
3
PLANT TISSUES TISSUES MERISTEMATIC ApicalLateralInterecalary PERMANENT SIMPLE Parenchyma Collenchyma Schlerenchyma COMPLEX Vascular Xylem Phloem DERMAL Epidermis Cork & Cork Cambium CELLS that work with other cells for a COMMON FUNCTION form TISSUES
4
MERISTEMATIC vs. PERMANENT TISSUE Meristematic Permanent Undifferentiated cells undergoing active growth Mitosis- cells dividing Cells where growth and differentiation is complete.
5
TYPES OF MERISTEMATIC TISSUE Apical Meristem Lateral Meristem Intercalary Meristem
6
APICAL MERISTEM Growth in length Primary Growth Root and shoot tips
7
LATERAL MERISTEM Growth in width or girth Secondary growth Vascular Cambiums
8
INTERCALARY MERISTEM Growth from the base of nodes Base of grass leaf or above node
9
PERMANENT TISSUES SIMPLE – contain only one type of cell Parenchyma Collenchyma Sclerenchyma
10
PERMANENT TISSUES - Simple Parenchyma Large round, loosely packed cells Primary cell wall Function- produce and store food like nectar and latex Collenchyma More differentiated cells Unevenly thick walls Functions- support for young organs leaves, stems, and roots Sclerenchyma Elongated cells Function- conduction, support, and protection
11
SIMPLE TISSUE EXAMPLES Parenchyma Pith and cortex Collenchyma Rhubarb and celery ribs Sclerenchyma Cotton, stone fruits, and pear grains
12
PERMANENT TISSUES COMPLEX – two or more different types of cells VASCULAR tissues XYLEM – conducts WATER PHLOEM – conducts FOOD DERMAL tissues EPIDERMIS – single cell layer CORK & CORK CAMBIUM Meristem and outer bark of woody plants
13
Assignment You and a partner will make poster about the Meristem and permanent tissues You need to have: Apical meristem Lateral meristem Intercalary meristem Parenchyma Collenchyma Sclerenchyma
14
You must answer the following questions: What is each of your tissues? Where can these tissues be found in the plant? Function of your tissue Pictures of each tissue Microscope pictures Plant pictures These must be in color and seen from a distance
