IAU/UNESCO Information Centre on Higher Education The Centre was created jointly by IAU and UNESCO in 1989. It is a Clearinghouse and an international resource for information on all aspects of international university life. It collects, reviews and updates information on higher education policies, higher education systems, higher education institutions, and programmes of study and qualifications.

The Centre’s documentary collections contain The Centre’s documentary collections contain: Over 40,000 books and reference works; 300 specialized periodicals; A vast stock of unpublished literature (conference and congress proceedings, reports, etc.); University catalogues and calendars; CD-Roms dealing with higher education.

The Centre maintains two main databases HEDBIB: the Higher Education Bibliographical Database WHED: the World Higher Education Database

HEDBIB: the Higher Education Bibliographical Database HEDBIB integrates the Centre’s own bibliographical database with that of various information centres including: UNESCO (Paris) and its regional education centres (CEPES, IESALC, IBE and IIEP); the Association of African Universities (AAU); the American Council on Education (ACE); the ERIC Clearinghouse on Higher Education (USA). Updates of HEDBIB appear regularly in the UNESCO CD-Rom: “UNESCO Databases”.

WHED: the World Higher Education Database WHED contains descriptions of the higher education systems and qualifications awarded in 180 countries and information on 16,000 institutions. It is published annually on CD-Rom.

Other Publications The IAU Website and IAU Electronic Bulletin: provide current information on IAU and higher education policy in general (http://www.unesco.org/iau) The International Handbook of Universities: provides data on some 8,500 university-level institutions worldwide (biennial). The World List of Universities and Other Institutions of Higher Education: a directory of over 16,000 higher education institutions and agencies worldwide (biennial).

Other Publications, continued... The Guide to Higher Education in Africa: contains details on the educational systems and institutions of higher education in 46 African countries; is the result of a new partnership with the Association of African Universities (AAU) (biennial).

Main Services Annotated bibliographies on a given subject. Information on the evaluation/recognition of degrees, diplomas and institutions. Information on Study Abroad. Tailor-made mailing lists and/or data files on higher education systems and institutions for a particular country/region or by field of study.
