4 W.E.B. DuBois (1868 - 1963) Born in Massachusetts after slavery had ended First African American to receive his Ph.D. from Harvard Wanted immediate equality between black and white people Wanted classical higher education for “top 10%” of African Americans Helped found the NAACP
