Beliefs I believe that all students can learn if given proper instruction and sufficient time. I believe that OMS is a place of learning. I believe that it is within our power to make this the best middle school it can be. I believe in working together to accomplish a common goal. I believe that we are always capable of doing more than is expected. I believe that we can accomplish more together then we can on our own. I believe that we will be successful and that we deserve it. I believe in putting fear aside. I believe in Exceeding Expectations!

Expectations Carried Forward Common Board Configuration will be utilized. Teachers will enforce school-wide rules (gum, dress code, etc.) Lesson Plans (Unit Plans) will be posted weekly on the Google Drive by the end of the first school day of the week. Learning Goals posted for each period of instruction (related to topics/standards, written as SWBAT or IWBAT). The posted Learning Goals will match the instruction in the classroom. Teachers will follow the Gradual Release model (or the 5E model in science) of Instruction. Students will READ, TALK and WRITE in every class period. Teachers will meaningfully engage students in active manipulation of the content. AVID Strategies associated with WICOR will be utilized in the classroom. Teachers will implement standards-based instruction. Teachers will participate in Instructional Rounds. Teachers will formatively assess lessons (and use results to drive differentiation). Social Studies teachers will utilize the DBQ Project materials.

Expectations for 2015-2016 Teachers will refer to and apply the scale or rubric for each period of instruction. Instructional Shifts will be posted in classrooms. Student DATA will be posted in your room. Exemplars of student work will be evident inside of your room. Teachers will collaboratively plan for instruction.

What’s New for 2015-2016 Master Schedule: Teams will no longer plan together; now grade-alike teachers will have common planning periods Literacy First: 3 year process… Starting this year, 16 teachers and RC are participating… Over 3 years, all teachers will be trained. Instructional Practices are evident in the classroom! OMS is participating in the Florida Alliance for the Arts Model Schools Partnership

What’s New for 2015-2016 I am continuing in the Commissioner’s Leadership Academy, Year 2 (Facilitator in Training) OMS Administrative Team conducting a book study on Leading for Instructional Improvement AT is BACK at OMS! Students dropped off early are working in the computer labs from 7:30 to 8:20 AM OMS is 1:1

Problems of Practice: Improving Instruction Standards-Based Instruction: We never got where I wanted during 2014-2015 So… We revised Master Schedule We attempted to define Instruction through Scopes and Sequences (OCSD Uniform Maps for Math 6- Algebra and Science 6-8) We utilize common assessments in grade-alike classes (including chapters, units, benchmarks and Interim Assessments)

Problems of Practice: Science Instruction District Support! Last year we signed up for Middle School Math and Science Participation Grant with Osceola County. Two OMS Teachers participating in extensive training in the 5E Model for instruction. District Math/Science Coach has been rewriting Quarter and Interim Assessments which are better aligned to FCAT 2.0 Science Test. Additional Assistance offered!
14
Problems of Practice: District Performance on Algebra EOC Secondary Principals met and decided to focus on student performance on the Algebra EOC as a district. We all owned the problem. At the middle school level, our best and most capable students take Algebra, but the students who are not passing the test at 9, 10, 11, 12 grade level are our kids in 8 th grade Pre-Algebra. We have used Math Vertical Teaming on Early Release Days and Common Scopes and Sequences Additional Training will be offered on January 5!

Early Results for ‘15-16 Feedback on Discipline Rules being FAIR and CONSISTENTLY ENFORCED At the end of Q1, I surveyed teachers and they report 100% of teachers feel rules fair 96% of teachers feel rules are consistently enforced in the office 90% feel consequences are appropriate

Wonderings for Future… 1. How can we motivate students to give best performance in a climate of (over)assessment? 2. How does increased FR Status of our students impact Student Achievement, Attendance, etc.? 3. How can we positively impact Attendance Rate? 4. How will our school grade impact OMS? 5. How can we continue to raise level of expectations without destroying morale of people already working hard/approaching capacity? 6. How will Student Growth impact our teachers?
