1 Chapter 21, Sections 1,2. The War for the West, Mines and Railroads.

2 The Great Plains are between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains, and stretch from Canada to Texas.

3 Reservations are areas of land set aside for Indians, and were originally operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

4 Sitting Bull A Sioux spiritual leader who was asked to give up Sioux land when gold was found there.

5 At Little Bighorn, Lt. George Armstrong Custer and all of his troops were destroyed by the Sioux.

6 Geronimo An Apache warrior who led a group off the reservation, and evaded capture for years.

7 Sarah Winnemucca A Paiute Indian who became one of the first to call for reforms in the way that the US Government treated Indians.

8 The Pony Express A system of messengers on horseback that carried mail from one relay station to another. Telegraph lines put it out of business.

9 The Golden Spike was hammered in at Promontory, Utah, where the two great railroad lines met.
