5 Journal #2  What makes you feel depressed? What do you do about it?  Use stories from your own life to support your ideas.  Use your own voice – informal, personal tone.  Pay attention to grammar and punctuation – they are there for a reason.  When you talk about a new topic, form a new paragraph.  Remember that your writing still has to be school appropriate  If things get too dark, I have to take it to the guidance office.  At least 1 page (hand written in your journal)

9 Theme  Example  Theme/Topic: Lack of Communication  Theme Statement: Holden’s inability to communicate effectively with many people in the book is a central theme in Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye.  Support  Holden does not go to visit Jane Gallagher when she is waiting for Ward Stradlater.  Holden often gets the wrong person on the line or doesn’t call anyone at all when he is in phone booths.  Holden never talks directly to his parents.
