The Last Years of Kamehameha I
Kamehameha I strongly continued the Kapu and the worship of the Hawaiian gods. As late as 1818, he ordered the deaths of 3 men who committed minor crimes. Kamehameha I would pass on May 8, 1819.

Kamehameha II - Liholiho
The eldest son of Kamehameha I and Queen Keopuolani. Liholiho was raised by Kamehameha’s favorite wife, Ka’ahumanu. On the morning of Kamehameha I’s death, advisors told Ka’ahumanu to do away with the kapu. She waited until Liholiho was king, however, he refused.

Breaking the Kapu Example 1:
Shortly after Liholiho became king, Queen Keopuolani and her younger son, Kauikeaouli decided to eat together – a violation of the kapu. Liholiho did not object(did not do anything).

Breaking the Kapu Example 2:
Kalanimoku, Liholiho’s advisor asked to be baptized on board a French ship. Liholiho did not object once again.

In Kailua, Kona, Liholiho prepared a feast for the people. He sat and ate with men and women. When the people saw that no punishment followed, they rejoiced that the kapu was banished.

Effects of Liholiho People burned heiau and the images of gods.
Many chiefs were angry that the kapu had been ended. A battle broke out between the “revolutionists” and the “traditionalists.” There were deaths due to the battle, however Liholiho pardoned all “traditionalists” who survived. “Pardon” – Excused from punishment.

Effects of Liholiho As the fighting ceased, ancient gods of Hawaii were no longer worshiped. Little did the Hawaiians know, servants of a new god – the god of the Christians were on their way to Hawaii – Missionaries. With missionaries, came more foreigners. The Hawaiian population declines due to diseases.
