1
Analyzing Issues Please take notes in your spiral on this PowerPoint. Write down the main ideas. You do not need to write down everything word for word. Paraphrase. Please do write down questions and ideas as prompted to do so.
2
Analytical structures are ways of framing ideas so that the writer gets beyond summarizing or reporting facts.
3
Analysis How does this connect to a particular theory? What lens can I view this through? Psychological? Sociological? Theological?
4
What do you mean lens? What is a psychological lens? What is a sociological lens? What is a theological lens?
5
Haiti Earthquake How might we view this in relation to psychological concepts? Sociological? Theological? Write down a question that you might ask that links each of these lenses to the situation in Haiti.
6
Solid Questions Drive Effective Research Ask what and then why? Make Connections- How does this relate to…? Craft Meaning- crafting meaning from facts- NOT simply reporting facts. Ultimately you must find a purpose for which that meaning is presented to a broader audience.
7
Current Issue Analysis- Comparing and Contrasting Helps the reader to look at ways in which different issues, that may not seem directly connected, are in fact similar Serves to inform our approach to those issues. How can solutions from one situation apply to another?
8
To what might you compare the situation in Haiti? How would you address the topic of Haiti from a compare contrast approach? Come up with at least three ideas as a group.
9
Cause and Effect Analysis Exploring why something became the way that it is, helps to identify the complex factors that lead to any given situation or outcome. Exploring the effects of something helps to illuminate potential solutions.
10
Consider the current events in Haiti through a cause and effect approach: The most obvious effects of the earthquake are physical. What about the other effects: social, economic, psychological, theological.
11
These strategies work well together. As you develop your analysis of an issue, you are likely to compare causes and compare effects. We can learn from one situation and apply it to another.
12
What are the less obvious causes of the current situation in Haiti? What about the causes other than the force of the earthquake itself that led up to the current situation: poverty, colonialism, economic development issues, etc…
13
Reading about Haiti What questions about the causes or effects of the turmoil in Haiti come to mind? Read an article from Proquest about Haiti. What additional questions come to mind? Write down notes as you read in your spiral. Paraphrase or write ideas in your own words. Write down at least one quote that strikes you to share with others who did not read this article.
