The Social Learning Theory states that children observe and imitate the actions of those around them and are rewarded for desired behavior and punished for undesired behavior. Children then learn their gender roles from the positively reinforced behavior. In the Gender Schema Theory, a young girl would have naturally developed a sense of femininity and then adjusted her behavior to comply with this sense. In the Social Learning Theory, the young girl assumes her gender role because she has imitated her mother, sisters, and/or other close females and has been positively reinforced. Examples of feminine roles include wearing pink and playing with dolls. Examples of masculine roles include wearing blue and playing with trucks.
