Vincent Flanders Vincent Flanders is a well-known speaker about Web Design –especially the bad aspects of Web design. He’s seen every mistake that Web designers can make: Mystery Navigation Huge graphics Inappropriate sound files Multicolored text Needless animation

Flanders’ Speeches Flanders gives different types of speeches and he keys each one to a particular audience depending on their level of expertise Known for his humorous and educational speeches of bad Web design. He’s given speeches such as: Fixing Your Web Site The State of Bad Design in the Year 2001 Avoiding E-Commerce Design Disasters Web Pages That Suck

What is Web Pages That Suck.com? It’s a web page to help people design effective and aesthetically pleasing web pages. Easy to teach someone to create a web page, but difficult to teach how to design a good web page. Help people learn what not to do when designing a web page. Help people and businesses from embarrassing themselves. Expose people with bad web designs.

The Daily Sucker The Daily Sucker is based on user input. A user can express his/her opinions about a new sucky web design they found by submitting the URL to WPTS. A new sucker is usually posted each day.

Example of a Daily Sucker Daily Sucker for June 19, 2001 I have always been a Dilbert fan, but Scott Adams has completely sold out on this one. They fairly recently changed the design of the Dilbert site so that the header is HUGE. I have a very large screen, and I STILL have to scroll down through more than 500 pixels of B.S. before I get to the comic. This has to be the most egregious example of this particular kind of suckiness that I know.

Mystery Meat Navigation Mystery Meat Navigation is a new style of confusing navigation A frightening navigation technique foisted on us by Web designers who want to win design awards by confusing visitors. This Javascript-based navigation technique consists of unlabeled images, which, when you move the mouse over them, it reveals the name and purpose of the link.

Vincent’s Top 10 Intranet Design Mistakes 1. Splash Pages 2. Keeping Unnecessary Design Items 3. Using the same design for the corporate Web site and the corporate Intranets 4. Forgetting the Japanese! 5. Forgetting that the “Top’s Gotta Pop”

Cont… 6. Poor Navigation 7. Flash 8. Forgetting that “Text is text and links are links” 9. Not testing your site with different browsers and different systems 10. Too much content

In Conclusion I think that web pages that suck.com sucks itself. Overwhelming because too much content I do not agree with some of his ideas about bad web design. Too much self-promotion involved.
