THERMO REDUCTION THE NON-BURNING PROCESS WHICH CONVERTS MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE (GARBAGE) INTO A VALUABLE RESOURCE
3
SOLID WASTE CAN BE AN ASSET 4 4 When solid waste is viewed as a valuable asset, the threats of a landfill crisis no longer exists 4 4 Placing organic materials in a landfill is an environmental hazard and should be eliminated 4 4 Reduction, Recycling and Re-use are only partial solutions 4 4 Conversion of solid organic waste into energy by thermo reduction (TR) should be viewed as the primary form of recycling when economics dictate. 4 4 Waste to energy systems have been downplayed because the wrong technology (incineration) has been used. 4 4 THERMO REDUCTION IS THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE FUTURE.
4
4 Organic materials (Anything with carbon in its molecular structure) placed in an oxygen or air free container (retort) and indirectly heated to a suitable high temperature (1200 degree f) will thermally decompose into two components: A gas and a solid 4 The solid (charcoal) is basically carbon and represents nearly 15% of the total organic material in the municipal solid waste. 4 The low BTU gas produced (200-300BTU/FT3) is suitable for burning in a steam boiler or gas generator set WHAT IS THERMO REDUCTION? TECHNOLOGY FROM THE PAST-- FOR THE FUTURE
5
CONTINUOUS FEED SYSTEM 4 Shredded waste is injected into a stainless steel rotating cylindrical retort (converter) and the char is removed without breaking the air seal 4 The volatile converter product gas (CPG) is continuously removed to control the pressure in the retort 4 The CPG is immediately used in a steam boiler --or generator set storage of CPG can be provided 4 The system is initially started with an auxiliary natural gas system. Once operating, 15% of the CPG produced sustains the system 4 85% of the CPG produced is available to produce electricity.
6
THERMO REDUCTION CAN SOLVE OUR MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE PROBLEMS 4 The volume of our municipal solid waste can be reduced by up to 90% 4 Charcoal is the solid produced by the thermo reduction or organic materials 4 Char has potential commercial value as an industrial and agricultural product 4 Thermo reduction is an environmentally safe system that produces energy, char and sterile inorganics as by-products
7
HAZARDOUS WASTES ARE SAFELY HANDLED 4 Municipal solid waste contains toxic, pathological, biological and other hazardous materials--there’s no way to prevent it! 4 Temperature and residence time in the converter are necessary to kill all organisms and sterilize the residue 4 Thermo reduction allows no exposure to the public or the environment 4 The WRIS process can convert most organic wastes in its facilities without modification of the equipment
