Egocentric – One’s view or beliefs are superior to others. Self-centered attitude. Ethnocentric – Belief that one group, nation, culture is superior to another.
3
Key terms Demography -- Study of human population. Birth vs. Death rate Emigration vs. Immigration Population Growth
4
Immigrate – Reasons for people to move to a new country or location permanently. - GO TO PULL FACTORS
5
Emigrate – Reasons for people to leave their country or location permanently. -- LEAVE PUSH FACTORS
6
Birth Rates – Number of live births per thousand. Canada 10.75/1000 Death Rates – Number of deaths per thousand. Canada 7.86/1000
7
Natural Increase – Is the difference between birth rates and death rates Other factors that affect population increase are immigration rate and emigration rate. These two factors will produce the Net Migration Rate.
8
Immigration Rate – Number of people who have immigrated to a new country per thousand. Canada = 7/1000 Emigration Rate – Number of people emigrating out of a country per thousand. Canada = 2/1000
9
Net Migration Rate – The difference between Immigration Rate and Emigration Rate. Population Growth Rate – The combination of Natural Increase and Net Migration.
10
Population Growth The population growth of a country depends of four factors: - Birth Rate - Death Rate - Immigration Rate - Emigration Rate
11
For example: Birth Rate = 13/1000 Death Rate = 6/1000 Natural Increase = ????
12
Immigration Rate = 6/1000 Emigration Rate = 3/1000 Net Migration Rate = ?????
13
Population Growth Rate = ???? 7 (N.I.) + 3 (N.M.R) = 10/1000 or 1.0 %
14
Over the course of Canada’s history the population growth has changed drastically. Birth control methods and advances in technology have allowed the Natural Increase Rate (B.R.-D.R.) to decrease. Changes in economic well-being in the country have constantly altered the Net Migration Rate.
