I. Rivers and Tributary Systems 3 major river systems – The Allegheny Western PA Actually consists of 3 major rivers The Allegheny The Ohio The Monongahela Major rivers of commerce – The Susquehanna Northeastern PA Starts in NY Flows south through the entire state of PA Too shallow for boats to travel on – The Delaware Eastern PA Forms a natural border with New Jersey Philadelphia Located on the Delaware Major deep water port

II. Lakes and Wetlands Lakes – There are more than 2000 small lakes in PA – Most were created by glaciers – Biggest Lakes in PA Pymatuning Reservoir Raystown Lake Lake Wallenpaupack Wetlands – Lowland areas, such as marshy or swampy places that hold moisture – Excellent habitats for wildlife

Reservoirs and Dams Reservoirs – A natural or artificial pond or lake used for the storage and regulation of water Dams – Help regulate the flow of water – Also provide Hydro electrics – There are 1564 Dams in PA – Largest Kinzua Dam Alleghany National Forest Statistics Type of structure: Concrete dam and earth embankment Height above streambed, feet – 179 Length, feet – 1,877 – Concrete section – 778.5 feet; earth embankment – 1,098.5 feet Width at base, feet 1,245 concrete section – 195 feet; earth embankment – 1,050 feet Volume of earth fill, cubic yards – 3,000,000 Volume of concrete, cubic yards – 500,000
