Responding to Literature: Opinion Survey Michelle Bonanno English 297

Bell Ringer! Complete the opinion survey that has been handed out to you.

How did Holden Caulfield score? Holden’s Score: 14 How do you compare to Holden’s score? Were you surprised by the relation? What does this tell you about Holden’s character? Ready to read The Catcher in the Rye??

Why… conduct an opinion Survey before reading?

It answers the “how does this relate to me” question. Motivates the students to want to read more. Gives the student background information on what they will be reading. Why…

How else can I use this strategy? An opinion survey can also be used as a reader response tool rather than a engaging tool. HOW? Having students complete a survey after reading allows them to focus on how the literature made them feel, how it relates to them, and allows us (the teacher) to ensure their knowledge and comprehension of the reading.

Final Comments… Can you see yourself using an opinion survey in your future classroom? Is there another way you can use the strategy?
