1 Achieving Classroom Excellence Act of 2005 Norman Public Schools Dr. Joseph Siano, Superintendent

2 Senate Bill 982 or the Ace Initiative Passed by the 2005 Oklahoma legislature Governor Henry signed on June 7, 2005 Effective date: July 1, 2005

3 The Oklahoma ACE legislation provides a framework for all Oklahoma school systems to implement standards, curriculum and assessments with the rigor and relevance necessary for Oklahoma students to be prepared for college and the world of work.

4 ACE—8 th Grade Accountability 2007-08 8 th graders will be proficient on reading and math criterion-referenced state tests If not proficient, remediation shall be provided in such ways as summer academies, tutoring, online coursework or other supplementary services

5 ACE—High School Mathematics Students entering 9 th grade in 2008-2009 will be required to complete three units of mathematics in Grades 9-12

6 ACE—End-of-Instruction Exams High School Diploma Students entering ninth grade in 2008-2009 school year must demonstrate mastery in a minimum of four out of seven selected subject areas to receive a high school diploma Each of the seven tests shall assess core academic subjects

7 ACE—End-of-Instruction Exams High School Diploma Two of the four required End- of-Instruction tests shall include Algebra I and English II

8 ACE—End-of-Instruction Exams High School Diploma Students who are not proficient on any required test shall be provided remediation and the opportunity to retake the test until a satisfactory or advanced score is attained.

9 ACE—College Preparatory Curriculum Students who enter ninth grade (as of 2006-07) are required to complete a college preparatory curriculum Parents may request, in writing, that their child not be enrolled in a college preparatory curriculum

10 ACE Task Force Recommendations The ACE Task Force endorses the current state and national policies related to Special Education students and English Language Learners.

11 2006-2007 School Year –College preparatory courses for 9 th grade students: English I Algebra I Biology World History Foreign Language Computer Technology Fine Arts
