2 Overall objectives. -proactively identify and resolve issues as they occur -monitor and manage performance, and scheduling of timelines -maximize impact of studies -manage inevitable ups and downs of HDR candidature -facilitate “seamless” transition through different stages of candidature -continued awareness of our duty of care as supervisors -ensure a high quality research training environment -maximize positive experience for the HDR candidate

3 Confirmation of Candidature -Is there a clear hypothesis and rationale? -Does the candidate have a solid grasp of the literature? -Does the candidate need to expand his/her knowledge base? -Are ethics approvals in place, if required? -Is the research plan sound and feasible? Can improvements be suggested? -Are methodologies clearly indicated and understood? -Has adequate progress been made? -Has the candidate completed research methods?

4 -Is there a well developed understanding of the research area? -How well does the candidate understand the broader literature? -How well is the candidate communicating their presentation? -Is the candidate on schedule? -What hurdles are hindering progress? How can these be overcome? Does the research plan need amending? -Is there a clear timeline to completion? -Is the candidate interpreting data properly? -How is the supervisor-candidate relationship tracking? Is the candidate getting sufficient supervisor attention? Is the candidate part of a vibrant research culture? -Can potential papers be mapped out? -Has the candidate (and supervisors) discussed submitting a review article? Mid Candidature Review

5 Completion seminar -Is there a well developed thesis draft? -Has the candidate developed considerable expertise, and evidence of original research development (for PhD’s)? -How effectively does the candidate communicate his/her research? -Does the body of work represent a substantial and original contribution to Knowledge? -What publications have resulted, and are more to follow? -Have 2 examiners been identified, and has the RPOE form been completed and lodged?
