Park was established in 1947. 1.5 million acres were set aside. Not all the land was meant for reclamation, part of the deal was to drain some for agriculture The Army Core of Engineers were responsible for constructing the canals in South Miami to drain the Everglades.

The Everglades are not flat! There are many clines, which yield many ecosystems. rivers, lakes, open ponds, sawgrass marshes, small tree islands (of bald cypresses, willows, and slash pines), large hardwood hammocks, sloughs, and mangrove swamps. These various ecosystems make for many types of flora and fauna!
