Aim: Aim: What are Sedimentary Rocks? Sedimentary Rocks I. Sedimentary Rocks – rocks formed by the hardening and cementing of layers of sediments. A. 3 types of Sedimentary Rocks Clastic 1. Clastic – rocks formed from fragments of other rocks. Ex: Shale, sandstone, conglomerate. 2. Chemical Chemical – rocks formed from mineral grains that fall out of a solution by evaporation or chemical reaction. Ex: rock salt and limestone.

3. Organic Organic – rocks formed from the remains of plants and animals. Ex: coal and limestone made from shell fragments. B. Characteristics of Sedimentary Rocks 1.Have layers (stratification) 2.Contain Fossils a. Fossil – remains, impressions, or any other evidence of plants and animals preserved in rock.
