2 Route Cards: Groups need to prepare a route card for each day of a venture Purpose of a route card: To identify where a group should be at anytime. To pre plan for emergencies. To aid a groups navigation on the ground A well prepared route card should enable a group to follow their route on a map using only the card

9 Recipe for Route Direction
Type of Path Footpath, bridleway, byway, national trail, orange road, yellow road. Direction North, South, East, West, SE, NW etc Distance 300m, 0.5Km, 1.2Km, etc Distinguishing Features Through woods, past rectory farm, uphill, across path junction, handrailing river on left To a point where either you change direction or path type changes

10 Recipe for Route Direction - Examples
Footpath SW for 400m past mast to cross paths, then bridleway W for 1.5Km downhill to junction with orange road. Byway N 1Km past Joe’s farm to junction with road, 200m west on road then bridleway N to Green Woods. Footpath N, curving NE 1.5Km to Manor house, then bridleway E 500m past church to junction with footpath.
