Warm-Up If 5.3 mol of calcium reacts with 3.8 mol of aluminum chloride, determine which reactant is limiting and how many moles of product can be made 3 Ca (s) + 2 AlCl 3(aq) 3 CaCl 2(aq) + 2 Al (s) Recall: The limiting reagent is the one that runs out first
2
Stoichiometry & Limiting Reagents LG: I can determine the limiting reagent in a chemical reaction and use this to make predictions about the products
3
Predicting Quantities of Products If you know the masses of reactants you are working with, you must first determine which reagent is limiting before making predictions about the products – Convert all quantities to moles – Use mole ratio to determine which reagent will run out first Remember: Predictions based on chemical equations are only theoretical.

Example 1 If 25g of K is reacted with 45g of CaCl 2 find the theoretical yield of KCl that can be produced
5
Example 2 10.0g of copper is added to a solution containing 20.0g of silver nitrate. a)Will a reaction occur? How do you know? b)Determine the theoretical mass of silver produced.
