Domain-Specific Vocabulary 1.Ronald Reagan: (b. 1911 – d. 2004) was the 40th President of the United States (1981–1989). 2.Mikhail Gorbachev: (b. 1931), leader of the USSR from 1985 to 1991. His policies of Glasnost and Perestroika (which aimed at strengthening the Soviet Union) contributed to the downfall of Communism. 3.Glasnost: policy which called for more openness with the nations of the West, and a relaxing of restraints on Soviet citizens. 4.Perestroika: policy to revitalize the Soviet economy by opening it up to more free enterprise.

In 1985 Mikhail Gorbachev became the 7th leader of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev pursues new ideas: 1. Glasnost (or openness) 2. Perestroika (economic restructuring) 3. START Treaty (downsized Nuclear weapons) 4. Withdrawal from Afghanistan: Soviets remove soldiers from Afghanistan.

Summary Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his leadership in the Soviet Union. Do you believe he deserved this award? Why or Why not? EXPLAIN.
